More Change???!Have you heard of a “swear jar”? Some families who are trying to improve their language will institute a swear jar. Any family member who swears has to put a quarter into the jar. But you can get creative with your family. Is there something your family would like to improve on that could use a “swear jar”? Here are some ideas, especially for those with older kids who generally have some money somewhere in a piggy bank. ;)

  • Every time your child talks back he or she has to put a quarter in the jar.
  • Playing video games, watching television, or other entertainment media “costs” $0.50 for every half an hour.
  • Family members must pay a quarter each time they don’t put away their shoes, toys, or whatever item always seems to be left on the floor each day.
  • Complaining about dinner will cost family members $0.50 each.

Of course these totals are just for example. You can tailor your “swear jar” penalties, and fees to match your family’s goals, age appropriateness, and even have a sliding fee scale depending on the age and infraction of the individual. Not only will you begin to see a change in behavior, but you can put that money towards a family goal. It makes paying the penalty a little easier.

Holiday Budget Plan One of the best ways to stay on track with your holiday budget, is to curb holiday impulse buying. Many people are guilty of impulse buying without even realizing it, and then wonder what happened to that careful planning when the bills come. Curbing your impulse buying now will help when it comes to balancing income and bills.

The most common place that people impulse buy, is at the grocery store. A good rule of thumb is never to go shopping when hungry, and always go shopping with a list and your coupons. This is something I talked about in my post last week, “5 Tips to Save Money on Groceries“. Don’t sabotage yourself by giving in to cravings either, or convincing yourself that you deserve a treat.

On the other hand, treats should be written into the family budget, whether those are food items, or an entertainment expense. Budgeting is much like dieting for calories. If you continually deny yourself all the good stuff, or the things that you like best, you’re more likely to rebel and go overboard by gorging or spending to excess. And given the spirit of giving throughout the holidays, it can be easy to do.

And of course, the classic safeguard against impulse buying is to ask yourself if you really need it. Is it on your list? Don’t stand there and argue with yourself, and try to rationalize the purchase. If you can’t honestly answer “yes” immediately, turn and walk away. If you really do need the item, you never know when you’re going to find a coupon for that item, or a better price during a sale. If you plan your holiday budget in advance, you can plan out your buying as well.

Happy Holiday Budgeting!

Grocery shopping tipsIn an effort to save money on your grocery bill, you have probably already implemented advice offered time & time again. Shop from a list. Buy what’s in season. Don’t shop hungry. Clip coupons! Look at what’s on sale each week. All are very good rules to shop by; however, there are other ways to save money on groceries. Take a look at five unique ideas to save money on groceries.

1. Shop with a friend to maximize. Food purchased in bulk is significantly less expensive. However, unless you have a large family or several freezers, that food could end up going to go to waste. Consider shopping with a friend. Together you can purchase a larger amount of bulk food (meats and other goods), split it up and save tons of money. This works quite well with items that can be frozen, as well as with non-perishables.

2. Learn to can and/or preserve food. Produce tends to go on sale during certain times of the year. For example berries in the summertime, apples and peaches in the fall. Buy them in bulk and preserve them. Then, you won’t have to buy jam or canned fruit for months to come. Additionally, canning supplies are really inexpensive and preserved foods taste a whole lot better than store-bought canned items.

3. Shop post-holiday.Just getting past Halloween, you may find all of the Halloween themed snacks, cereals, and other products (yes, even candy!). Hams after Easter. Corned beef after St Patrick’s Day, and let’s not forget turkey after Thanksgiving. These meats drop to about a quarter of the price right after the holiday. Buy them and freeze them for later in the year.

4. Homemade convenience. The cost of flour, eggs, milk and oil is about a tenth of the price of a box of frozen waffles. Instead of buying prepackaged foods for their convenience, make them yourself. You can make a double or triple batch of waffles, or pancakes, even french toast on the weekend and freeze them. Simply pop them in the toaster in the morning and you have all the convenience at about a tenth of the price. Plus, homemade tastes better. Add cinnamon and chopped apples to your waffle recipe and you don’t even need to add syrup!

5. Hit the ethnic markets. Skip the big box stores and head to your local meat market, Indian market, Spanish market or Asian food store. These stores specialize in ethnic cuisine; however, the produce is often the same as you would find in your local supermarket at a much lower cost. Plus, it can just be fun to try new markets and new food.

I advise you to continue using those money-saving rules of thumb: Make a list, shop by the weekly sales paper supplements, try to do it in season, and by all means continue to clip coupons. But, for extra savings, try implementing these additional five tips. You will be amazed how much more you can cut out of your grocery bill.

Here’s to saving you more!
