Like many people, I want to declutter my household. It’s just that I look around and oftentimes feel completely overwhelmed by the process. But, I’ve learned that if you break it down into easy and manageable steps, you can make progress a little at a time.

Here are ten tips, that can take no more than one minute each, to help you declutter your home.

1. walk through a room in the house and pick up as many things as you can to throw out in 60-seconds
2. walk around the house and put everything that should go up, or downstairs on the stairway, and the next time you have a minute, move them up, or down to where they belong.
3. spend 60 seconds putting things away – maybe something from step 2, or whatever is out.
4. make your bed – seriously it only takes a minute!
5. sort your mail – toss the junk right away before it stacks up.
6. pay a bill – write a check, make a phone or online payment
7. clear off a table – be it the coffee table, or your main dining table
8. spend a minute putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher
9. wipe an annoying spot on the wall, or sticky spot on the floor (okay, I admit that’s more cleaning than it is decluttering)
10. make a list of 10 other things you could do in a minute

If you are serious about keeping each step to a minute – it might help to invest in a digital timer. Once you’ve done any of these a couple of times, you’ll have a better idea of what you can accomplish in a minute. You will see a small dent then eventually a larger one, and your decluttering progress will be made a little at a time.

We have a family birthday party coming up at our house next week. Instead of doing a full meal for the 20+ people that will be here, we’re doing cake and coffee, then after the presents will come the “after-party”. Everyone is going to hang out for the rest of the night, and I’m feeling the need to have something available for us to munch on as the night progresses. Here is one appetizer I plan to make ahead and freeze. That way on party night, all I have to do is pull them out of the freezer and pop them in the oven.

Olive-Cheese Rounds
2 1/2 C. shredded cheddar cheese
1 1/2 C. sliced olives (our family likes black, but you could use green)
3/4 C. mayonnaise (real mayo, not Miracle Whip)
3/4 C. sliced green onions (tops included)
2 pkgs. party bread, or rye rounds (enough to make 48 appetizers)

Mix first 4 ingredients together and spread on bread rounds.
Put assembled rounds on cookie sheets, cover securely with plastic wrap, then freeze
Be sure to remove the plastic wrap before putting in oven ;)
Bake at 350 until cheese is melted and lightly browned (approx. 5-10 minutes)

This is my Mother-in-law’s recipe, and a family favorite of ours.

Manage Your Time and Enjoy Life More

As Moms we know that there are a million things each day, week and month that must get done. But you need to get some fun in the mix as well. Use some good time management tips and enjoy the family you are taking such good care of.

Write out your to do lists for the week, this a biggy. Make a very detailed to do list and write it out for each day of the week. I also add in things like which day to clean the bathroom or change the sheets.

Keep all appointments for the family on one calendar. If you have the ability, also set them up on your phone. Having them all in one spot will make it easier to schedule other things for similar times and get errands done at once.

Plan your meals. Don’t waste time each day trying to think of what’s for dinner. Make a plan and stick to it. Make as many of the meals ahead of time as you can.

Schedule your work time. Let the family know that this is a time you MUST work. When you can schedule it will depend a lot on the age of your family members and how much supervision they need. Scheduled work time needs to be uninterrupted. So if you have to get up an hour or two early or stay up after the kids go to bed, make sure and get that uninterrupted time a couple of days a week.

Carpool with other parents and use that extra time to work or get house cleaning done.

Don’t sit at the kids practice and do nothing. Take a notebook or laptop and get work completed. This may be the only uninterrupted time you can grab during the week to work. Have other kids bring their homework and get it done while waiting.

Making the most of your hours will leave you more relaxed and feeling less chaotic by the end of the day. Working smarter, not harder goes for all aspects of life, not just business. Condense activities as much as possible during the week and enjoy your weekend with the family making memories instead of always doing errands.
