eco-friendly solutions for clean drainsNo matter how careful you are, you will find that there are many cases where your drain gets clogged up and water is unable to flow, or only drain very slowly. When this problem happens, it’s nice to be able to get it fixed right away. When you are looking for an eco-friendly method to clean your drains, there are a few things to keep in mind.

In the first place, make sure that your drain is really clogged. One of the most common culprits when it comes to clogged up drains is grease, especially if it has been cold recently. Grease will quickly go to a solid form if the temperature drops, and the remedy for this problem is very simple. All you need to do is to heat up some boiling water on your stove and you will find that when you pour it down the drain that you can easily free up a clog that is mostly grease. In some cases, you’ll find that you can even use very hot water from the tap.

For more stubborn clogs, you may choose to use the remedy that is provided by some very common household ingredients. Head to your pantry and mix half a cup of baking soda with half a cup of white vinegar. Though any vinegar will do, white vinegar is the cheapest and oftentimes the harshest, as well. Pour the mixture down the drain and then chase it with boiling hot water. This will dissolve many of the worst clogs, without needing to resort to anything stronger.

It is also very simple to get a hold of a plumber’s snake or even a plunger. A plumber’s snake will actually wind down the drain to physically dislodge the clog, while a plunger will use air pressure to pop it out to a state where you can simply get around it. Either of these devices can be bought quite easily and inexpensively.

If you are looking for another solution, you may be interested in drain cleaners that are specifically eco-friendly. They’ll use enzymes to eat away at the clogged material and then dissolve into harmless matter.

When you are looking at the solutions that are available to you when you are looking to unclog a drain, remember that using a commercial drain cleaner might not be in your best interests. Take some time and think about all the methods of unclogging your drains that are available to you. There’s no reason to reach for the Drano when there are so many great eco-friendly, and chemical-free solutions available to you instead.

Holiday Budget PlanDo you need nice, inexpensive gifts for your neighbors, or your child’s teacher? Do you have any clue what to give them? This Christmas, don’t stress yourself out by shopping for just the right gift. Instead, make your own homemade holiday gifts. Try these ideas that your neighbors, and teachers are sure to love.

1. Layered Cookie, or Drink Mixes
Buy a box of Mason jar and lids at your local grocery store. These are usually available year-round. Purchase a small amount of fabric, to decorate the lids with. Using your favorite cookie and drink recipes, layer the dry ingredients inside the jar. Print your recipe on a small card, punch a hole in the top corner, and tie it around the lid.

2. Homemade Jams and Jellies
If you grow your own fruit or veggies, homemade jams and jellies (or pickled veggies) are wonderful gifts to give. Make sure to can/jar extras during the summer months when you harvest. Then you’ll have ready-made gifts on hand at the end of the year! You can “pretty” the jars with your own decorations, if you wish.

3. Inspiration Jar
This is a nice gift for neighborhood kids, as well. Write special, inspiring or motivational messages on small slips of paper. Fold them in half and drop them into a small, clear jar or bowl. Then write a special message on a card to go outside the jar, telling your friend or neighbor that the next time she’s feeling down or sad, take a message out of her “Inspiration jar” to help cheer her up.

4. Homemade Goodies
Who doesn’t love homemade cookies, candy or bread? Plan a special day just for baking. Create all your favorite treats, including your famous homemade bread, or handmade candies. Prepare trays of treats for your neighborhood holiday party, to share at the office, or your child’s school. You can find inexpensive plastic trays at most dollar or department stores.

This time of year, you want to show those who play a part in your life that you care. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and when it’s homemade it shows that it comes from the heart.

There is nothing nicer than receiving a gift related to one’s passion. If you know someone who’s passion is gardening, maybe Dad this Father’s Day, then show your thoughtfulness by giving a gift that will be truly appreciated.

There are so many great gardening gifts! The only constraint might be your own budget.

If your budget is small, go for things like gloves, kneepads or even a shady hat. A pretty pot (or a watering-can) filled with a small bag of potting mix, a packet of bulbs, some gloves and a small trowel or other tool will be received with delight by most gardeners. There are many hand tools at hardware stores that are reasonably priced.

If you feel that is too ordinary, how about a subscription to a gardening magazine? A tiny bit more expensive perhaps, but it will give twelve full months of delight. A book on gardening is another idea, but make sure your recipient does not already have the one you choose. Books are often heavily discounted at Christmas time, so you may get a bargain.

On the other hand, a pot that contains a flowering plant is usually a welcomed gift. Be sure to choose a plant that is suited to your climate. Sometimes plants are sent from tropical to temperate zones and kept in artificial conditions in the store. These plants will not do well once taken from their environment. Shrub roses are hardy and attractive and grow in many climates. Tulips do best in the cooler climate. Though here, you might want to go with a gift certificate if you’re not sure.

If your budget is strong, a more expensive tool may be appropriate. A pull-trolley is easier to use than a wheelbarrow and, like some electric tools, is still not terribly expensive. Small electric tools such as whipper-snippers can retail for as little as $20.00. Or if your friend has a hose but not a hose reel, then that would be a more useful gift that he would truly appreciate.

Automatic lawn mowers, electric cultivators, hedge trimmers and brush cutters are in the more expensive price range and you are the only one who can decide whether that is an appropriate gift. However, when the recipient realizes you have given a gift that complements his passion, expensive or not, it will certainly become one of the more thoughtful gifts your friend has ever received.

So, whether it’s the holidays, a birthday or some other special gift giving occasion, like Father’s Day, there are gardening gifts available to fit any budget. Know your gardener, and you will be able to come up an appropriate gift that will make a lasting impression.
